Half of that was due to new plants entering service in China. Restarting four nuclear power plants for the first time since the Fukushima Daiichi accident in Japan and higher availability in France together added 38 TWh. Production in Switzerland, Taiwan, Pakistan and Sweden also increased. Generation fell in South Korea, because of new maintenance regulation, and in Belgium, because of shutdowns caused by safety-related concerns.

Despite the important increase in generation from low-carbon sources, coal- and gas-fired generators were also called upon in to meet higher electricity demand. The highest increase in coal power generation took place in China, followed by India. These countries more than offset significant reductions in the United States, Europe and Japan. Natural gas was the second-largest single source of global electricity generation and grew by almost TWh, nearly as much as coal.

Cote d'Ivoire. Soon, the US will be the second country after China reaching an installed capacity of more than Gigawatt. Some countries are making very good progress in accelerating wind power deployment rates. Such acceleration is imperative not only to achieve the objectives of the Paris Climate Change agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals, but also for every country to participate in the full socio-economic advantages of renewable energy. In this sense, it is very unfortunate that Europe seems to lose track in terms of new wind power installations.

On the other hand, it is encouraging to see that Europe seems to understand the importance of citizens-based approaches by giving special attention to prosumer and community power models.
